Anecdote

In the 18th century, a natural crossbreeding between the grapefruit (citrus grandis) and the sweet orange (citrus sinensis) produced the pomelo (citrus paradisi). In Florida, the fruit spread naturally. It was during this period that it got the name "grapefruit" due to the large golden clusters growing from the trees. However, the fruit known in the West under the French name pamplemousse and English name grapefruit is actually a pomelo.
